Missions Blitz – The Beginning
On September 23, 2012 Reverend Kay’s dream of a congregation ready to leave the sanctuary and go into the streets to “Lend a Hand, Spread Love and Show Christ” was realized. This was the first annual Missions Blitz. Prior to the realization of the dream, many hours of planning had gone into developing the dream. A Missions Blitz Core Committee was formed. Planning for a Health Fair now known as a Health and Fitness Fair were undertaken
Members of the committee wanted to add what is now the Job and Career fair. Service organizations where contacted to ascertain what their needs were and if they could accommodate members of FBC on a Sunday morning. Once the locations where determined, all that was left was motivating the congregation. The response was amazing.
On that first Missions Blitz Sunday morning more than 400 members came ready to leave the sanctuary to
clean senior housing, to landscape schools, clean the Anacostia Watershed, to prepare meals for individuals living in transitional housing, sort clothes and can goods and countless other areas of service.
On September 22, 2013 the response was even greater with more than 600 members taking to the streets to make a difference in the lives of so many in the DMV. That year it was decided that FBC needed to do more and to do more required more.
That year the 1st Annual Golf Tournament was established, where the proceeds are used to offset the cost of Missions Blitz as well as fund H.O.P.E. Inc. a 501 (C) (3) organization that provides transitional housing.
During the 3rd Annual Missions Blitz the Health and Fitness Fair along with the Job and Career Fair where moved to Saturday as a means of reaching more or the community.
With that change we saw the attendance rise substantially.
In 2015 the Health and Fitness Fair along with the Job and Career Fair will be moved from the North Brentwood Community Center to Northwestern High School with a hope of reaching even more of the community.
Reverend Kay’s vision is to give the Annual Missions Blitz an international component beginning in 2016.
Missions Blitz is truly where the community can witness the believers of a loving God in action.
